DFW M'Antiques: Free Beer, Great Humor and Neat Stuff!

A feminist walked into an antique store for men. No, that’s not the start of a bad joke. It’s what happened when I checked out DFW M’Antiques in the Bishop Arts District.

DFW M’Antiques is like the treehouse with the “no girls allowed” sign after the boys become teenagers: It’s a place for the boys to escape to, but they clearly still want the girls to stop by and appreciate their cool clubhouse. In fact, the store has a section of women’s clothing and jewelry, and it’s clear within moments of talking to owner Compton Creel that the intent of marketing antiques to men isn’t a dig at the ladies. Based on these Yelp! reviews, the female patrons mostly appreciate the niche marketing tactic and enjoy the store all the same.

“We wanted a place that was just for guys to hang out,” Creel said, adding that they offer all patrons a free cup of beer as they shop. That “we” refers to himself and business partner Robert Owen. The pair have worked in the antique business for years, but Creel said they wanted to open their own store because they had grown tired of the high rent to operate booths at antique malls throughout the metroplex. The Bishop Arts district is known for its boutique stores, but Creel says when men get tired of the boutiques they should check out M’Antiques. Here’s an article from the store’s opening back in 2011.

Creel joked that although the store has only been open for two years (their two-year anniversary is in October), the owners were really time travelers visiting through a temporal vortex.
“So would you say that you’re more ‘Brigadoon’ or ‘Doctor Who?’” I asked.
“I’d say we’re a little too chaotic evil to be Doctor Who,” Creel said with a mischievous grin. “We’re willing to interfere with people’s lives and change time.”

DFW M’Antiques has almost as much humor and character as Creel, with items ranging from cheap and fun to the truly rare. Creel is proud that M’Antiques allows patrons to pick up and play with items. “We believe that people should be allowed to handle the artifacts,” Creel said. “The education is more important.”

The store itself is filled with toys, antique cameras, vintage pinups, animal horns and heads (including the elusive jackalope!) and all sorts of miscellaneous bric-a-brac. I really enjoyed checking out their military memorabilia. There’s even a box of animal bones for sale. Because of the diversity of items the store stocks, there will be something to catch your interest or imagination, regardless of gender.

“If we ain’t got it, we can get it,” Creel said, joking that “small thermonuclear devices take at least three weeks.”

DFW M’Antiques is definitely worth a visit for anyone looking for a truly unique Dallas experience. Be warned that some of those vintage pinup photos are topless, so parents may want to check the store out without their children to decide whether they feel comfortable bringing in the whole family. But overall, I would say that the fantastic artwork outside and the unique collection inside makes DFW M’Antiques a must-see when visiting the Bishop Arts District.

The store is open 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays, 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and closed on Monday.
